My NCS experience started on the 26th June 2017. I was nervous but excited to start a new journey. The initial fear when I walked through the gates of Chesterfield College and questions of will I make friends, will I get on with my team and Team Leader, will the programme be right for me? The answer was yes to every one of them!
Phase one was full of adventure and life changing activities, with lots of great memories made as well as being able to push my limits and step way out of my comfort zone. A week with the same 11 people on adventurous activities created a bond between us that will last a lifetime. By the end of Phase one the group of 12 strangers felt like a family.
Phase two was a week of discovery for me, I really felt like I had found a part of myself that I had never met before. The best part of Phase two was the lip-sync battle on the last night where I managed to entertain everyone dressed as Harley Quinn! I also learnt life skills on Phase two and finally found the confidence in myself that I had been looking for.
Phase three was all about social action! The team was tested during planning, as we all had amazing ideas but in the end we all decided on organising a dog walk for the RSPCA. The planning week also had some very fun activities such as a drama session and a post graduate talk informing us about all the opportunities available after the NCS programme is finished.
Graduation was certainly a night to remember! I got to see all my amazing friends that I had made on programme again and perform my lip sync battle for a second time! It was honestly one of the best nights of my life! I hoped that my NCS wouldn’t finish there because of the sense of belonging and love that I never got anywhere else! At the end of the night I was extremely upset as I thought my NCS journey was over, but I didn’t know what was in store for me after…
NCS helped me to move to a residential college where I used some of the skills I had learnt on programme to join several clubs and societies. Within a few weeks I was fundraising again and helped to raise £19,000 for a Young Peoples mental Health charity in Cheshire, further increasing my confidence and social network.
I joined the NCS Regional Youth Board in Cheshire to continue my NCS journey of personal development. This opened up so many amazing opportunities with such as volunteering with on an inflatable obstacle course run by a company called Active Cheshire; having my voice heard by 100's of people as part of the North West Regional Youth Board, taking part in many meetings in Liverpool and being able to explore a new city with some cracking friends.
A company called HYPE contacted me recently and have asked me if I wish to take part in a social action project in New York next April, I'll give you one guess what I said!
The NCS adventure for me has been life changing and the best experiences of my life so far! It excites me to think that this is just the beginning!
